  • Scalpel Blade (or Scissors for simple shapes)
  • Cutting Mat (if using scalpel blade)

GO TO SHOP

STEP ONE

Draw your design onto the tracing paper with pencil or fine liner pen.

Alternatively, find an image or font as a template and print out.

STEP TWO

On the tracing paper, outline the design with pencil.

STEP THREE

Place shiny foil face down on the work bench.

Using masking tape, attach the tracing paper to the foil – with the design facing down.

The design will now appear as the reverse.

STEP FOUR

Trace over the design outline with pencil, leaving an imprint on the back of the foil.

STEP FIVE

If using a scalpel, firmly attach the foil to the cutting mat with masking tape.

Cut along the outline.

*Warning – take care when using a scalpel.  Do not place your hand or fingers in direction of the cutting blade.

STEP SIX

After cutting along all outline, reveal your design by discarding unwanted pieces.

Ensure you keep any internal letter shapes.  Put to the side.  For example – the centre shape of a letter “e”.

STEP SEVEN

Flip the foil over to the right side up.  Admire your work  – smile!

(The foil has a protective clear layer still attached, so don’t be concerned if there are any marks or scratches).

Place the foil into position on the fabric where you want your design.

STEP EIGHT

Now for the super exciting bit…

Heat your iron to a cotton setting – with steam.

Using a 100% cotton or linen tea towel place on top of the foil and press well with the hot iron.

If your design is in several pieces, it is recommended to iron on one piece of foil at a time – to ensure minimal movement.

Check edges are firmly adhered to the fabric.  You may need to repeat the ironing process and add more steam or heat.

STEP NINE

Wait until the foil is cool.

Remove the clear protective layer by bending the foil near the edges or corners and flicking with your finger nail.  Peel away and discard to reveal a super shiny and very beautiful metallic foil.

See if you can keep your eyes off your stunning work!
